Remembering the fallen
REMEMBRANCE services were held at war memorials, churches and schools throughout North Somerset this week to remember those who have died fighting for their country.
On Armistice Day, pupils at St Peter’s Primary School in Portishead held a special service of remembrance while workers at offices and shops across the district bowed their heads to pay their respects during the two minute’s silence.
More than 60 people lined up in front of Backwell War Memorial at 11am on Thursday and children from Backwell School, Backwell Junior School and Fairfield School placed wooden crosses in the Garden of Remembrance to mark the occasion.
On Sunday a street parade was held in Portishead High Street, led by Portishead Town Band.
Members of the Portishead Royal British Legion were joined by community groups ranging from scouts, guides and army cadets to members of the fire service, police and lifeboat trust.
The parade concluded with the laying of a wreath at the war memorial at St Peter’s Church and was followed by a special service led by Rev Andy Bryant.
In Portbury, after a service at St Mary’s Church, the congregation joined residents at the war memorial for a short remembrance service.
St Andrew’s Church in Backwell was full to bursting for the inter-church remembrance service.
The Royal British Legion branch standard was paraded as well as flags from the scouts and guides.
The Last Post and Reveille were played either side of the two minute’s silence by Toby Riches and the choir led the parade and congregation out to the war memorial for the wreath-laying ceremony.
