THE accelerating loss of ice in the Arctic will be the subject of discussion at an evening event organised by Transition Portishead.
The group will be showing On Thin Ice, the final episode of the BBC’s Frozen Planet series, on January 31 at St Peter’s Church in Church Road North at 7.30pm.
Professor Jonathan Bamber, head of the Bristol Glaciology Centre, will lead a discussion about the loss of ice, looking at why it is happening and what it means not just for the Arctic and the animals and people who live there, but for the rest of the world.
Questions to be explored will include whether it is a good thing to open up exploration for much needed fuels and minerals and allowing easier shipping of goods, or if we should be concerned about the effects of climate change and the wider implications for the world we live in. Everyone is invited to go along and join the discussion.
