TWO new flower beds in Portishead got the thumbs up from Portishead in Bloom and the town council after a recent inspection.

The beds called the The Groynes, because of the wooden sleepers framing them, were planted by Portishead scouts earlier in the year, close to the Gordano Gate roundabout at the town’s entrance. The scouts have agreed to maintain the beds throughout the year.

Chairman of Portishead in Bloom Sandy Tebbutt said: “It takes a tremendous amount of work to maintain our Gold Award status, so we are now appealing to more members of the community to offer their support.”

Portishead in Bloom is launching its Sponsor a Basket scheme for the winter/spring baskets which will be hung on carousels in the town during November. These cost 15 each and all sponsors are thanked on the organisation’s website.

The group also urgently needs more help at its monthly group meetings, especially with secretarial, design and community work and the Friends of Portishead in Bloom, who meet regularly for work parties, are also looking for more volunteers.

Sandy added: “There are sometimes large amounts of green waste to dispose of and we desperately need people to help transport it. Sprucing up an untidy or unwanted patch of ground with our support is another way of helping.”
