ONE of the oldest family businesses in Portishead is upholding tradition.

Matthew Aldridge, general manager of funeral directors F H Halliday and Son, has moved his family into a house in the town’s High Street, where the company founder lived with his family in the 1800s.

The business was established in 1880 by Frederick Halliday and then passed to his son William in the late 1950s, when his nephew Edward Lawrence also joined the company.

When William retired in 1966 the business became a limited company owned by the Lawrence family. It is still owned by the family today, accompanied by Matthew and his team.

Matthew said: “As funeral director I was offered the opportunity to move into the home that was once lived in by the founder of the business and I am honoured to follow company tradition like this.”
