In a statement on its website, a spokesperson for Yatton Infant School said: “I am sure you are aware of the devastating news that there was a fire at the infant school resulting in significant damage.

“We are currently working with our trust putting an incident plan together and we will be in touch in the next week to confirm where your child will be educated from Tuesday next week.

“Please stay away from the school site so the services can do their jobs.

“Just to confirm no-one was in the building. Thank you and please be patient with us.”

In a separate Facebook post, the school said: “Thank you for your offers of help.

“Obviously we will need everything replacing but this will be sorted in due course. Sending love and support to all and huge thanks to the firefighters involved.”

Yatton Schools, which includes the infant school and Yatton Church of England Junior School, said: “We understand that the community are keen to help with fundraising to rebuild the school and we are really grateful.

“That said, if the community does want to donate please can this be done directly to the Yatton Schools Association charity so we can benefit from Gift Aid and ensure all funds are directed where Jo (Keeble, headteacher) and the governors feel it is needed most.”
