VANDALS have attacked a new Tesco Express store which is due to open in the coming weeks.

Windows were smashed and a door damaged at the property in West Hill, Portishead, overnight on February 13.

Sergeant Jim Robinson said: “We are aware that tensions are running high in the community over the opening of a new Tesco Express, but we will not tolerate any criminal behaviour and will deal robustly with offenders.”

Sgt Robinson confirmed the police are in possession of some evidence and are working to bring the culprit to justice.

More than 2,700 people in the town signed a petition against the new Tesco which plans to operate seven days a week, across the road from a family-run supermarket which has served the West Hill community since 2007.

Anyone with information about the vandalism should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
