There are delays on the M5 today (Friday) with queues on the northbound carriageway between Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon.

Queues stretch back as far as Taunton, but traffic is particularly slow between junction 21 (Weston) and junction 20 (Clevedon).

Highways England has not reported any accidents, but delays are currently around 30 minutes.

However traffic is expected to worsen throughout the afternoon, as people flock to Bristol Balloon Fiesta.

UPDATE: 4.46pm. M5 crash causes delays near Portishead

Highways England is reporting a collision on the M5 northbound near junction 19 (Portishead).

One lane is closed. The road is not expected to return to normal until 7pm.

UPDATE: 4.29pm: M5 traffic at a standstill

Traffic is not moving on the M5 southbound between junction 19 (Portishead) and junction 20 (Clevedon). There are then queues until junction 21 (Weston), where it clears.

There is congestion along the northbound carriageway throughout the whole of Somerset.

Issues remain on the A370 and A38, with queues now building around junction 21 of the M5 at Weston.

Drivers in Backwell and Flax Bourton are experiencing particularly bad queues on the A370.

UPDATE: 3.02pm: Slow traffic in Yatton

North End Road, in Yatton, is particularly slow this afternoon. Wales & West Utilities is carrying out work on the road, and temporary traffic lights are in operation.

The roadworks will run until September 1.

UPDATE: 2.33pm: Stop-start traffic on A370

People are now experiencing delays of up to 45 minutes on the motorway, and as drivers bid to avoid the congestion traffic is now building on the A370.

There is stop-start traffic between Backwell and Congresbury and queues all the way to Weston.

People are also reporting delays on the A38 around Bristol Airport.

UPDATE: 1.26pm, delays spread to M5 southbound

An earlier accident on the southbound carriageway of the M5 – which has now been cleared – has led to long delays.

There are queues stretching from junction 21 (Weston), where the incident took place, to junction 18 (Avonmouth).

There are particular issues between junction 20 (Clevedon) and junction 19 (Portishead) with drivers facing delays of at least 30 minutes, with parts of the motorway at a standstill.
