A multi-award-winning film from the 1970s will make a one-off return to Clevedon’s Curzon cinema this month and the Times is offering readers the chance to see it for free.
The Deer Hunter is a 1978 American war drama about a trio of Russian American steelworkers whose lives are changed forever after they fought in the Vietnam War.
Michael (Robert De Niro), Nick (Christopher Walken) and Steven (John Savage) are lifelong friends from a working-class Pennsylvania steel town.
They prepare to ship out overseas following Steven’s elaborate wedding and one final group hunting trip.
However when they arrive in Vietnam their dreams of military honour are quickly shattered by the inhumanities of war.
Other notable names in this film include John Cazale in his final role and Meryl Streep.
The film is based loosely on an unproduced screen play called The Man Who Came To Play by Louis Garfinkle and Quinn K Redeker.
The film won five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director for Michael Cimino and Best Supporting Actor.
It was also Streep’s first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
The Deer Hunter will be at Clevedon’s Curzon, in Old Church Road, for a one-off screening on August 8 at 7.30pm.
