It is lidos versus modernisation in the latest show to be performed at Clevedon's Theatre Shop.

Very Modern pays homage to a 'modernist age and an ideology for a better and brighter future', according to the theatre's website.

"At the height of lido culture, with its forward-thinking and ambitious concept of rejuvenating air, sun and water, lidos gave communities a sociable, open-air place to swim," it writes.

"The Swimmer emerges at a pool-side of nostalgic optimism and celebrates a golden age of swimming."

The character in the performance also 'celebrates the spirit of the lido as she meets the swimming suffragettes who pioneered a popular pursuit'.

"She is an athlete of the imagination and navigates the bold architectural aspirations of modern Britain from the local lido to the purpose-built housing estate.

"As the tide turns, the Swimmer portrays a brave testimony to an ideal and a future lost."

Very Modern follows the critically-acclaimed We Are Brontë, a madcap re-imaging of the Brontë myth by Publick Transport.

We are Brontë was described as 'a mini comedic masterpiece' by Stage Talk Magazine, where it was awarded five stars, while the British Theatre Guide described the performance as 'detailed, precise and beautifully comic'.

Sarah Corbett, a Bristol-based actress and theatre maker, takes centre stage in this gripping production.

Very Modern will be at the Theatre Shop, in Queens Square, on June 6 at 7.30pm.

Tickets, priced £12, are available from www.theatreshop.org.uk or call 03336 663366.

The theatre has once again teamed up with the Times to offer two lucky readers a pair of tickets to the show.
