A Star Is Born

Acclaimed by many as the greatest Hollywood musical ever made, the epic 1954 version BFI Musicals: A Star Is Born is being screened at the Curzon Cinema on December 12 and one lucky reader will win a pair of tickets to see it for free.

The second of four adaptations of the classic musical melodrama, the film stars Oscar-nominated July Garland in what has been described as one of the finest performances of her entire career alongside James Mason as the lovers on opposing ends of fame.

Hollywood actor Norman Maine (Mason) is a celebrity whose stardom is beginning to dwindle but when he meets aspiring actress Esther Blodgett (Garland), he is inspired to help her and soon the two lovers appear in a musical together. Now known as Vicki Lester, she marries Norman and finds her career reaching international glory while Norman's reputation continues to decline, resulting in heavy bouts of drinking.

Vicki must choose between her sparkling career and attempting to save her husband.

Directed by George Cukor, his version boasts superb songs by Harold Arlen and George Gershwin, including the sublime and devastating The Man Who Got Away.

Garland gives a truly extraordinary performance in this film which was intended as her comeback role four years after the suspension of her MGM contract following a suicide attempt. The actress identifies with both Esther's dreams and Norman's downfall in a raw, intense and thrillingly vulnerable performance.

The screening will start at 7.30pm in Clevedon.
