Nick Tucker's first goal for Wrington Redhill Reserves gave them a hard fought 1-0 win over Selkirk in the Weston & District League.

Selkirk sat third in the Division Two table and were smarting from defeat to lowly Banwell Reserves on their return from lockdown.

And the visitors began on the front foot as a long ball saw Wrington keeper James Williams rush from his goal and misjudge the bounce of the ball, to be rescued by the covering Fin Taplin.

It was Williams' only mistake of the game and one of a number of crucial clearances by Taplin, with Louis Rouvais releasing the energetic Joe Moore to run clear and force a fine diving save from Josh Collins.

Moore's cross from the resulting corner was headed on by Tommy Johnson for Tucker to nod home what turned out to be the only goal of the game, as Rouvais released Johnson to force another brave save from Collins soon after.

Selkirk's Ben Forse and Harvey Davies were always a danger, using their speed to threaten, and a long ball saw the two of them race clear only for Williams to pull off an extraordinary double save at full stretch as they seemed certain to score.

Williams was again called upon to make another good save, as the ball dribbled towards the line and he only got back just in time to clear, as strong challenges went in from Dean Rix and Tucker in the Wrington defence and Paul Burnett in midfield.

Chances started to dry up but a tempting free kick from Moore evaded everyone as it ran across the six-yard box and Tucker almost repeated his earlier goal from another corner but it was deflected wide.

As half time approached Wrington pressed for the comfort of a second goal and Chris Holland drove them forward, breaking several challenges but striking the ball too well as it flew over the crossbar.

Wrington were determined not to make the same mistakes as the previous week during the second half, as Simon Lee replaced Rouvais to provide an outlet in attack and hold the ball up for Johnson and Rory Thomas.

Johnson went closest to a second when his shot found the side netting as Callum Briggs returned to shore up the defence and Williams was called upon to make several fine saves to keep the visitors at bay.

Selkirk had a good shout for a penalty waved away, but Wrington also had chances as Max Brean harried his man to win the ball and release Johnson, but a smart turn and shot from Lee was narrowly wide.

Then, a last-minute header from Tom Leeson had Williams at full stretch before clearing which fittingly gave him the last word as the game's standout player.
