Backwell Swimming Club youngsters found the going tough in the first round of the National Arena League at the weekend.

Matched against strong teams from Bristol Penguins, Neath, Devenport Royal, Severnside Tritons, Barnstable and Team Bath - with many National swimmers - Backwell set six club records and 19 personal bests from 34 individual and 16 relay races.

But they could not avoid finishing in last place and coach Martin Lee said: "We are now looking forward to the next round, to show that we can grow, improve and make our club proud.

"We are very proud of all our swimmers and love to see them enjoy the challenges and opportunities that come their way.

"We actively encourage our swimmers to be the best they can be, in swimming and life. Events such as this give our swimmers the chance to grow in stature and confidence."
