A Backwell resident won gold at this year's British Karate Championships in Leicester.

Bristol Karate Academy chief instructor Tim Griffiths was named British champion in the Male over-35 Kata event after beating Kanku Sho in the final.

Griffiths was taking part in this championship for the first time and competing under the guidance of his long-term mentor, and former ESKA European champion, Sensei Matt Price.

“On the day, I was able to pick up some last minute bits of advice from my coach and teammates. This was hugely helpful when competing,” Griffiths said.

“Being there with the whole team, including my clubmates Josh (Mashford) and Liam (Mashford), gives you a real boost.

“It fills you with confidence when you’re part of a great club like the Academy and with a forward-looking national federation like JKS England.

"Everyone at the club and our federation is behind you. Thanks to everyone for your support and encouragement.”
