CLEVEDON Lawn Tennis Club is celebrating victories in the top division of both the North Somerset and the Avon Winter Leagues.

The first team, which consisted of James Bassett, Mike Dale, Kat Rolfe and Josie Vickers, won nine out of 10 matches in the North Somerset League Division 1 to finish with a final score of 84, beating Woodlands Tennis Club by two points.

In the Avon league, the same team, supported by other Clevedon league players including Becca Ewing and Lucinda Davidson, battled against some of Bristol's and Bath's finest tennis clubs to chalk up a second big win, having been successful in seven of their 10 matches, which enabled them to finish on an impressive 74 points.

In the other divisions, Clevedon also recorded excellent results. The second team, playing in Division 2 of the North Somerset League, battled against a number of local club's A teams, but despite the high standard managed to finish a respectable fourth, which means they retain their place in this division for another season. The team was made up of Brenda Plummer, Shirley Hyde, Tim Wookey and Mike Maiden.

The third team fared better, finishing third in Division 7 which means they will also remain in this division next season. The third team consisted of Stephanie Allen, Julia Davidson, Deb Barnes, Mandy Vickers, Gill Grinyer, Emma Gurhy, Vicki Potter, Steve Vailes, Ken Bell and Roland Allen.

Clevedon also fielded a team in the Avon League Division 4a. The team played against some strong Bristol clubs, including Clifton and benefited from being able to combine the experience of seasoned players such as June Forte, Jenny Bowen and Sue Norman with some of the club's younger members - club coach Mike Greedy and star juniors Becca Ewing, Seb Hind and Stephanie Allen. The team finished a respectable second and will stay in Division 4a next season.

Clevedon's veterans' team also came out on top, finishing first in Division 2 of the Avon Winter Veterans's League and securing promotion. Pauline Barnett, Vet's team captain led her team, which included Ian Barnett, June Forte, Sue Norman, Doreen Bailey, Brenda Plummer, Mandy Vickers, Clive Bushy, Mike Maiden, Brian Tayler and Dave Pratt to victory, battling against local teams throughout the winter season.
