THE fourth weekend of the Somerset County Champonships has just concluded at Millfield School, Street.

Clevedon ASC, sponsored by Bristol Hotspring Ltd, has been massively disadvantaged by having their home pool at Strode Road closed down due to lighting failure. Despite the hardship of having to travel to alternative pools, Clevedon swimmers took the championships by storm to produce
probably their best medal haul ever.

The club won 13 gold medals, four silvers, and 10 bronze. The swimmers produced 171 personal best times, two national qualifying times, 53 ASA South West qualifying times from a record 13 swimmers and smashed 37 club records.

Steph Reynolds led the Clevedon challenge. She set a new Somerset County junior record in the 100m backstroke on her way to senior and junior titles and came runner-up in the 200m backstroke agan at junior and senior levels. She totalled 10 individual gold medals, one silver and one bronze to go with a host of regional qualifying times and two national qualification times.

In individual events, George Leaman gained a silver and a bronze, Lizzie Warnes won silver and Dani Appleford took two bronze medals. Tom Jones, Matt Bray, Callum Greenwood, Amelia Chappell, Erika Mason and Harry Thornton each took bronze medals.

The boy’s medley and freestyle relay squad of Matt Bray, Ben Horner, Alasdair Jones and Guy Prideaux won double gold and the girls’ open age squad of Dani Appleford, Becca Parsons, Steph Reynolds and Lizzie Warnes won gold in the freestyle relay.

The younger age groups at the County
Championships have an overall age group
classification and Clevedon success came from: Olivia Twynham Richardson, formerly from
Clevedon, but now at Millfield School, winning the
10-year-old girls, Amelia Chappell came seventh in the 11-year-old girls. George Leaman was fifth in the 11 year boys. Ellie Chappell came 10th in the 12 year girls. Matt Bray was fifth and Guy Prideaux ninth in the 14 year boys.

Clevedon now look forward to the ASA South West Region Champonships, where they will be represented by Dani Appleford, Lucy Barratt, Matt Bray, Amelia Chappell, Ellie Chappell, Alasdair Jones, Tom Jones, George Leaman, Guy Prideaux, Steph Reynolds, Harry Thornton Lizzie Warnes, and Gwillym Watkins.
