Nailsea & Backwell Rugby Club fielded three girls' teams for the first time as they took on Minehead.
Last weekend saw an historic day at Nailsea & Backwell Rugby Club as for the first time, three girls’ teams took on Minehead.
This season, the club has a newly-formed Under-18 team to add to the Under-13 and 15 teams developed over the last three years, showing the rapid increase in the sport among the local girls.
The Under-13s had a good game with several new players gaining confidence in tackling and passing. The came together as a team in the latter stages and were unlucky to lose 8-10, but show great potential for the rest of the season
The Under-15s started strongly and showed they are able to work together to create some great passages of play. Tries followed from both teams in a closely-fought match which saw the lead change throughout the game.
N&B stayed focused and came away with a well deserved 26-22 win.
Finally, the Under-18s took on a strong Minehead side and a great game of rugby followed. Both sides played well throughout the game with many individual moments of skill and a large collection of tries.
The N&B girls clearly are coming together as a team and the evidence of the hard work at training paid off including good defence and a high conversion rate. The game was a close-fought effort, but in the end the N&B girls secured a 43-37 win.
Girls’ rugby is clearly a growing sport in the area and through the hard work of the coaching team, girls are being offered plenty of opportunity at the Nailsea & Backwell club.
The club is always looking for new players to join all three teams and any potential new members are most welcome to come along to Nailsea & Backwell Rugby Club to give it a try.
The Under-13 and 15 teams train Tuesdays (6.30-8pm) and the Under-18 train Wednesdays (7-8.30pm).
