Clevedon Saxons clinched promotion from Somerset North Three with a stunning derby win over local rivals Yatton on Saturday.

Led by Ollie Wilson and James Barzotelli, Saxons had only lost one game all season and topped the table since late November.

And manager Nick Wilson was delighted with their achievement, saying: “These lads capitalised from the previous season and remained together as a team.

“This has been a major attribute to their success, along with the hard work and guidance from coaches Nick Hill and Neil Tucker.”

John Pearse rallied the team ahead of his final outing and Aaron Mason broke through to touch down for Ethan Thomas to convert from a tight angle.

Clevedon camped on the Yatton 22 but were frustrated until Olly Barcham powered his way over for a try.

Ben James ran in the third try from halfway and would finish with a hat-trick, as Brad Lias also went over to put Clevedon 33-0 up at the interval.

The second half was a mirror image of the first, as Clevedon doubled their tally to run out 66-0 winners.

Sunny Barzotelli took over as scrum-half and further tries were scored by James Grinstead, Pat Childs, Mason and Ollie Wilson, with Thomas converting all bar one of them.

Yatton kept fighting until the final whistle, but strong defensive work by Jack Williams, Rory McGuigan and Tom Williams kept them off the scoreboard.
