THIS lower half table game was a nail biter right down to the final whistle.

Paignton started strongly and had Clevedon under the cosh and took an early lead with a penalty. A few good kicks put Clevedon into the Paignton half and from one, good forward play saw Clevedon take the lead with a try by debutant Alex Giltrow, the conversion hitting the upright.

The Clevedon forwards were now having a good spell and further domination led to a try by Ashley Vailes, converted by Mike Taylor, who soon added a penalty. A good counter attack and weak tackling saw Paignton reduce the deficit. On half-time, Taylor kicked another penalty for Clevedon to lead 18-8.

The second half saw Clevedon having to defend for most of the game, but their well marshalled defence held firm. The hosts received two yellow cards which made their task more difficult and all Paignton could muster were two penalties.

Clevedon struggled in the line-out, but more than held their own in the tight. The last 10 minutes had the crowd on tenterhooks with Clevedon missing two kickable penalties and Paignton pressing on the Clevedon line right to the final whistle.

On Saturday, Clevedon travel to Sidmouth, kick-off 2.30pm, coach leaves 11.15am.
