Clevedon were left empty handed after a 29-20 loss to Matson in their first league match of the new season.

The hosts showed lots of spirit against a physical Gloucestershire side, who opened the scoring with a converted try.

Matson's forwards were met by some dogged defence, while Tom Thie, Grant Cherrington and Mitch Jordan made fine breaks.

Thie converted a penalty for Clevedon, but a fumbled lineout led to a second Matson try to make it 12-3.

Despite having a player in the sin-bin, Clevedon veteran Ashley Vailles went over from a quick tap penalty to cut the gap to four points.

But Matson moved 17-8 up, before captain Brian Largenton went over and Vailless converted to leave Clevedon two points behind.

The visitors scored twice in quick succession to make it 29-15, before Ollie Jones went over, but the conversion shaved the posts and a losing bonus point went begging.
