Edd Ryder-Smith breaks through for Clevedon during their win over Barton Hill

Clevedon claimed their first win of the season with a determined display against Barton Hill.

The visitors, in third place at kick-off, came up against a determined Seasiders, who recycled the ball well and forced their way forwards.

Sloppy passing proved a problem, but Barts came up against stoic defence from Ford, Tucker and Smith.

The deadlock was broken on the 30-minute mark when Edwin Smith's strong run set up a chance for Johnny Hicks to score out wide.

Barts hit back with an unconverted try of their own to level it up again, but Clevedon regained their lead just before the break when a forward surge was finished off under the posts by captain Brian Largenton, with Alistair Balcombe adding the conversion.

And as defences held firm in the second half, Clevedon ran out 12-5 winners to delight coach Nick Hill, who said: "I'm really pleased for the lads who showed tremendous spirit. Credit must go to our new assistant coach Nick Carpenter, who has worked hard on our defence and it paid off."
