NAILSEA travelled to Combe Down for this league game hoping to put last week’s disappointments behind them and got the result they wanted, but not in the fashion.
Although Nailsea enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and territory, their handling let them down on many occasions, but they still managed a try by winger Mat Watkins inside five minutes.
Ten minutes later centre Alex Blackwell muscled his way over for a try which was converted by centre Rob Baker. A break in midfield led to a try for Combe Down to bring the scores to 5-12 in Nailsea’s favour.
The visitors were sometimes guilty of over complicating their handling, but scored the try of the game when a sweeping passing movement ended with second row Darren Chidzey popping up on the wing to go over in the corner to make the half-time score 5-17 to Nailsea.
After the break, the hosts scored a converted try to close the gap to 12-17. Nailsea put pressure on Combe’s line and from a kick to the corner, a catch and drive saw Chidzey go over for his second try to put Nailsea firmly in the driving seat.
Nailsea finished off with two more tries from Blackwell and Watkins to make the final score 12-32 to give Nailsea the bonus point win.
Although not totally pleased with the performance, Nailsea were pleased with gaining the bonus point win.
Nailsea face Combe Down again on Saturday, this time at home and will be looking to tidy up some areas that caused them problems.
Nailsea head coach Leo Costello will be working this week with the Irish Exiles at a training camp in Buckingham, but hopes to return in time for Saturday’s game.
