The under-13 boys performed with great distinction in a field of 12 regional finalists to claim silver medals behind event winners Surrey.

The obstacle relay team were second in the first event of the weekend, winning their heat by some distance and finishing just 0.3secs behind the winners.

Sidcot's George Isgrove and St Katherines' James Wamulo were part of that relay team.

And there was no shortage of success throughout the rest of the competition as Kenny Newbury (St Katherines) was a lead-off runner in the 4x1 lap and 4x2 lap relays, winning both.

Isgrove was part of the victorious 4x1 lap squad, while Kanye Christie (St Katherines) joined Mansour Aw (Orchard) in the Paarlauf and ran brilliantly as the team finished just outside the medals in fourth.

Team captain Christie ran well in his four laps, finishing 10th out of 24 competitors.

Wamulo produced a personal best in the triple jump of 7.33m to finish fourth, while fellow St Katherines pupil Ryan Bundy had an excellent speed bounce score of 72 having helped the team win the South West title earlier in the year.

Team managers Dave Turner and Susan Jones said: “We're over the moon and full of praise for each member of the team, who raised their game at just the right time.

“This talented team had practised together the week before at St Katherines School and the team spirit shone through.

“A wonderful, noisy and enthusiastic band of parents and supporters cheered the team on all day, waving flags, and were congratulated on their support and attitude.”

Full results are available on the sportshall.org website and the Avon Schools' Athletics website.

Meanwhile, Turner collected the UK Sportshall Associations' Services to Sportshall Athletics award in recognition of his contribution to the sport.

Involved since its inception in 1984, Turner has organised many events including an annual Avon Schools' Championships hosted at BGS Sports Hall.

The under-13 boys have won the UK title nine times under his guidance and Turner received his award from George Bunner MBE, creator of sportshall athletics.
