Maria Powell finished second in her age group and sixth overall at the British Duathlon Championships.

A COLD and damp Saturday morning saw over 600 competitors at the British Duathlon Championships.

PAC Tri member Maria Powell was at the Rutland Water Park-based event, seeking to add the Dambuster Duathlon age group honours to the silver medal won at last year’s British Standard Triathlon Championships.

Despite this being Maria’s first attempt at the distance of a 10k run, 42k bike ride and 5k run, the Bike Science-Boardman Elite Team rider produced two solid runs and a fast bike leg to finish sixth lady overall in a time of two hours 16 minutes.

Maria took the silver medal in her age group and qualification for the Great Britain age group team for the World Duathlon Championships.

Maria said: “My race went well and I achieved my goals of a 40-minute 10k run, a strong bike leg and a sub 20-minute 5k run. Triathlon is my focus, but this is a tough event that really tests how training is going, proving the hard work with my training partners and coach Andy Bullock is paying off.”
