The final of the Weston Table Tennis League’s Archdale Cup handicap competition produced an exciting contest.

The crowds that turned up at St Barnabus Church Hall saw Portishead Sharks take on N&B Panthers in a closely-fought encounter.

Each match consisted of two games of 21 points, with N&B Panthers Janie Gill, Paul Wright and Ron Stevens enjoying a team bonus based on their average for the season.

Portishead's Jake Tucker, Jack and Ray Jenkins had to confine their opponents to under 42 points, less their team bonus, while Panthers needed to score six to 10 points to beat their more able rivals to the coveted target.

Honours finished even after six matches, but the patience, control, accuracy and power of the Sharks eventually saw them claim victory by a 21-point margin, as they came out on top by a 378-357 scoreline.

Their win was dedicated to the memory of former player Deon, who died a year ago.
