More than 150 swimmers flocked to the lido for the Portishead Popsicle.

People travelled from as far away as Newcastle to take part in the festive event at Portishead Open Air Pool. While the temperature of the water was a fresh 4.5C, the swimmers took part in the pool’s second cold water gala. The water was so cold it met International Ice Swimming Association standards.

The swimmers took part in races of various distances and many chose Christmas costumes to compete in.

Edible Santa medals from Heaven on the Hill, chocolate oranges and knitted Christmas hats were given to those in the best festive attire. Pool volunteer Barbara Thatcher said: “The weather was beautiful and there was a wonderful atmosphere. It was great to see people coming so far to visit Portishead and we will definitely be making this an annual event.”

The pool will be open on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
