NORTH Somerset travelled to Weston for a tricky rearranged fixture, with the intention of sealing promotion with five games of the season still yet to be played.

One point would seal it for North, following the previous day’s results against South Gloucestershire.

Tensions were running high from the start and the match showed all the ingredients of a feisty local derby. As Weston started the stronger team, they soon scored a goal to put them in the lead.

The game followed a regular scoring pattern with North responding to every Weston goal. First to find the net was captain Mike Hooper, followed by Adam Howard and Jack Butter.

With the game petering away to a draw, North were awarded a late penalty corner for an infringement inside the Weston D. This was coolly slotted home by Louis Johnston, to seal victory and a promotion for North.

Man of the match was veteran goalkeeper Richard Gardner.

Other results: Men’s 1st XI 10, South Gloucestershire 0. Scorers: Mike Hooper (3) Ben Jones (3), Jack Butter (4). Men’s 2nd XI 7, Westbury 1. Scorers: John Poole (4), Adam Howard, Richard Pugsley and Lewis Francuz. Ladies 1st XI 7, Clifton 1. Scorers: Emma Tilley (5), Michelle Harrold and Lisa Larsen.
