Wraxall Village Club open their pigeon racing season

WRAXALL Village Club sent a record entry of 500 birds to Lyndhurst (New Forest) for the opening race of the 2011 pigeon racing season.

Released at 8.15am into a light variable wind, the birds romped home. The winning bird, a yearling hen, belonging to Lulsgate member Dave Moore, took one hour 10 minutes to complete the 57 mile flight.

Results (20 members sent 500 birds): D Moore 1435 yards per minute (48.92 miles per hour); G Summers 1420; B Isaac 1414.9; J & N Stone 1414.1; B Isaac 1407, 1406.

In their next race, the birds were released from Bedhampton near Portsmouth at 8.45am into a strong north east wind. The leading bird, owned by Worle member Phil Newton, completed the 90 mile flight in one hour, 35 minutes.

Results (20 members sent 389 birds): P Newton 1706 yards per minute; P Newton 1675; N & J Stone 1663; B Isaac 1657, 1656.4; N & J Stone 1656.1.
