Weston 2nd XV 19 pts

Nailsea & Backwell welcomed Weston seconds to the West End Park and were narrowly defeated.

The visitors took the lead on 15 minutes when winger Matt Watkins sprinted around the home defence to score. Three minutes later, Watkins produced a carbon copy to score his second try.

Nailsea regrouped, determined to keep the ball away from the dangerous Watkins and just before half time, after a period of sustained pressure in the Weston 22, Nailsea outside-half Ryan Anthony make a clean break and go close, only to pull up with a pulled hamstring.

Nailsea were awarded a penalty kick and from the resulting line-out, they produced a move straight off the training pitch as hooker Ryan Barrow threw short to Dickie Palmer, who returned the ball to Barrow to crash over to make the half time score 5-10.

After the break, Weston were awarded two penalties which were converted making the score 5-16. However, Nailsea set up a strong rolling maul to crash over, prop Sam Cook coming up with the spoils. Jamie Elswood added the extras to make it 12-16.

Weston converted another penalty and in the last few minutes of the game, Nailsea again demonstrated their forward dominance when a scrum was pushed over the line for Palmer to make the full time score 17-19 to Weston.

This was an absorbing match, well handled by referee Mr Seaton with the flying feet of Matt Watkins being the difference between the two sides. On Saturday, Nailsea visit Tor (2.30pm).

Nailsea 2nds visited Avonmouth 2nds, but due to the lack of a referee the game was postponed. Nailsea 3rds however visited St Mary’s 3rds and returned with a 28-27 victory.

Nailsea Colts entertained Wellington and with tries from Dan Jones, Sam Williams and a last-minute try from Dan Farrar, they ran out 17-12 winners.
