ONE of Clevedon’s newest water sports clubs is giving members of the public the chance to choose a name for its new vessel.
Clevedon Pilot Gig Club is currently having a gig made at Bristol’s Underfall Yard in preparation for the next season.
In the meantime, members of the public are being asked to chose a name for the boat.
The shortlisted names are: Watch & Pray (the motto on the Clevedon coat of arms), Kubla Khan (from the famous poem by Coleridge, a previous resident of Clevedon), Excalibur, Cleaver, Clevedon Ladye and Severn Challenger.
The competition will close on Sunday. For more details visit www.clevedonpilotgigclub.co.uk
Clevedon Pilot Gig Club was formed in February 2009 and since then has gathered numerous members as well as enough funding to build its first gig, a traditional rowing boat for six people.
Pilot gig clubs have been set up around the country and now there are 140 gigs registered with the Cornish Pilot Gig Association, which revived the sport in the 1980s.
