Nailsea United were edged out 2-1 in the battle between fifth and sixth place in the Uhlsport Somerset County League Premier Division at Fry Club on Saturday.

Playing in their first game since December 18, Nailsea opened the scoring at Somerdale Pavilion after good interplay between Matt Day and Matt Williams with the former giving his side the lead after five minutes.

On 10 minutes Matt Williams broke down the right before crossing to find Charlie Parsons but he was unable to control his shot and the chance came to nothing.

The hosts then began to assert more pressure on the United defence with two shots in close succession both of which were wide of the target from James Phillips and Liam Gardner

On the half an hour mark a mistake in the Fry defence gifted a chance to Leon Osborne but he couldn’t find the target.

The moments of the first half from the Nailsea perspective was the hold up play by forward Williams with his back to goal and the assured performance by the very young Jakob Hole on the right side of the back four.

Unfortunately the lead wouldn’t last long as Fry Club levelled the scores in the 48th minute when the Nailsea defence failed to clear their lines.

A first time cross from Hugo Brunsdon found Sam Hewitt who flicked it on for Liam Gardner to tap home at the back post.

Nailsea continued to probe with Mike Rowcliffe firing over the bar and Tom Kemble failing to convert a good chance following a corner on 60 Minutes.

Fry Club’s pressure finally reaped a reward with a cross from Brunsdon eluded the United defence before being controlled by Hewitt who fired past Owen Adamson and into the back of the net allowing the hosts to take all three points.

There were mixed results for the other Nailsea sides. The Reserves beat Fry Club Reserves while the A side beat Isle of Wedmore Reserves 2-0. But the B team lost 5-1 at Locking Park Reserves

This Saturday Nailsea United travel to high riding Clevedon United while at the Grove the A team entertain Churchill Club with the B side hosting Axbridge United. All games kick-off at 2.00pm.
