Nailsea came within a whisker of upsetting league leaders Old Bristolians Westbury at The Grove on Saturday.

Having put the visitors into bat in cool and breezy conditions, they struck early through Josh Dann (2-43) befoer OBW moved to 69-1.

The introduction of Jack Smith (3-31) reduced the visitors to 122-5 as Wylie (49) and Swetman (48) scored the bulk of their runs.

But Nailsea could not press home their advantage and the lower order lifted the total to 210-8 at tea, as Liam Lester finished with 1-29 from his nine overs and George King (1-24) and Mike Ready (1-41) also had success.

Nailsea made a good start in reply, as openers Ready and captain Gareth Dann (18) shared a half-century stand.

Dave Ingram (25) helped Ready in another good partnership, while Tom Moss and Josh Dann both made 14 before falling to a sharp caught and bowled chance and an excellent diving catch on the boundary, respectively.

With Ready still at the crease, now supported by Lester, Nailsea were well placed, but fortunes changed after they departed for 68 and 28.

The wily Gareth Griffiths used the stiff breeze behind him to check scoring, finishing with 6-38 from his seven overs as Nailsea came up eight runs short of their target.

Nonetheless, Nailsea will take heart from a decent performance ahead of a trip to YMCA this weekend.

The seconds travelled to Beggar Bush Lane to face OBW thirds in a reverse fixture, but it turned out to be a one-sided contest.

Nailsea were weakened by injuries and unavailability and saw the home side amass 297-1 as Randal Leonard hit an unbeaten 158.

Ronnie Riddicks took the only wicket to fall, with Ben Foran and Andy Caine getting Nailsea off to a decent start in reply.

But once they fell for 11 and 12 respectively, only Alan Rogerson (20) could reach double figures as the visitors were skittled for 77 ahead of a home match with Bedminster fourths.
