NAILSEA seconds travelled over the Mendip Hills to historic Wells to play this mid-morning game.

They started well and forced several promising attacking moves on the home defence. However, Cheddar would have been first to take the lead, but for some solid blocking play by Rach Yeo and Jen Atherton.

Nailsea took the lead after six minutes when a reverse sweep strike by Jo Faiers found the back of the net. The rest of the half was an even tussle in the middle of the pitch, with both sides striving to take command.

Cheddar fought hard to pull the goal back and were particularly dominant in the dying minutes of the half. Again Yeo and Atherton pulled off some vital tackles to rob the home side. They were ably supported by midfielders Gee Corner and Faiers, dropping back to secure their lines.

The second half continued in the same mode and Nailsea had to dig deep to retain their lead. Bakers player of the match Faiers worked tirelessly in midfield and was unlucky not to add to her total when a shot from a penalty corner went wide.

Despite this half being full of incidents, injuries, a carding and some questionable decisions, Nailsea held out for a narrow victory.

Nailsea 1st XI beat Lodway 2-0 at home and are second in the Brunel 1 table, as are the 2nd XI, in Brunel 2.
