Imagine your side is drawing 0-0 with five minutes left in the FA Vase and you have been asked to come on because of injury to your goalkeeper.

You save two penalties in a shootout then step up to score the winning spot-kick to send your side through to the next round.

It sounds like a dream but is what exactly happened to Portishead Town’s Head of Football Dave Hewitt on Saturday.

Hewitt wasn’t even supposed to be in the squad after Posset named only five substitutes for their first qualifying round tie with Shriveham at Bristol Road.

After speaking to referee Jack Bromham, Portishead realised they could name seven on the bench and Hewitt, who had played 90 minutes in a 5-1 pre-season win against Olveston and saved a penalty, was given his chance with five minutes left.

George Shanks-Boon went down with a calf injury and Hewitt, who also acted as physio, saw he couldn’t play the rest of the game and took his place.

The match ended 0-0 and with Town 2-1 down in the shootout Hewitt pulled off his first save to help claw the score back to 3-3.

He then saved another penalty before stepping up to score the winning spot-kick to secure a date in the next round against Cribbs.

“Stuff like this always plays over in your mind, coming on and scoring the winner in the last minute but never happens. To do it after saving two penalties in an FA Vase game was immense. I am absolutely buzzing to say the least,” Hewitt said.

“It was Roy of the Rovers stuff. It’s great for the lads and great for the club. We now have Cribbs who are flying high on September 24 to add to our already crazy schedule.”

Manager Eamonn Daly hailed Hewitt’s display as a 'magical cup moment' on a 'very strange day'.

Daly confirmed Portishead went into the match without 11 first-team players but hailed their display to come away with victory.

“It was fantastic drama and I’m extremely proud how my players played,” he added.

“To do what they did was remarkable, we even controlled the game for periods and could have won the tie in normal time.

“This goes to show the depth we have now and the progress we're making as a whole. It has to be up there with one of my best wins since being in charge.

"It seemed we were up against it, but the lads pulled out a great performance and with all the drama at the end, it made for a very special day.”
