Substitute goalkeeper David Hewitt helped Portishead Town overcome Shrivenham in a penalty shootout to win in the first qualifying round tie in the FA Vase on Saturday.
Manager Eamonn Daly rung the changes with only three players remaining from Tuesday's Toolstation Western League Division One 2-1 defeat at Almonsbury.
Wingers Ben Greenslade and Matt Lloyd saw lots of the ball in the early stages, running at the defence and creating a number of chances against the Hellenic Premier League side.
Lloyd went closest in the early exchanges as his shot from the right side of the box cannoned off the far post.
Shrivenham struggled to retain possession as Posset's Calum Townsend - captain for the day - orchestrated things and sprayed dangerous balls forward at will.
Portishead's backline were organised though Joe Lott and Joe Dyas regularly stepping up to catch the Shrivenham attackers offside as the visitors grew frustrated.
As half-time neared Shrivenham finally got in behind the Portishead defence but the chance was spurned with the shot put wide.
The second half picked up where the first left off as Shrivenham enjoyed more possession and looked the more dangerous but Portishead remained a threat on the break.
Goalkeeper George Shanks-Boon made a couple of smart stops, while at the other end Matt Lloyd and Joe Fitzgerald had half chances foiled.
As the game entered the final 10 minutes a seemingly innocuous challenge left Shanks-Boon down in obvious discomfort.
After receiving treatment for several minutes, it became clear he wouldn't be able to continue, and Hewitt picked up the gloves and Shansk-Boon's jersey to take his place in goal.
The final whistle went shorty after to signal penalties.
Shrivenham scored their first penalty before Calum Townsend converted to level. Hewitt went close to saving the next effort - pushing the ball onto the post before it ricocheted into the back of the net.
Fitzgerald went next but his kick was well saved.
Hewitt dived and palmed away the next effort and Matt Lloyd calmly converted to level the scores.
There was nothing Hewitt could do about the next Shrivenham kick, but Lott powered home to tie things up again. Shrivenham's fifth spot-kick was brilliantly saved by Hewitt, diving to his left, to give Town match point.
Hewitt then went from penalty saver to penalty taker as he took his gloves off, placed them on the floor and from a short run-up placed the ball into the bottom right corner to book Posset's place in the next round.
Portishead are back in action this Saturday against Oldland Abbotonians at Bristol Road.
