Hampshire gold for young badminton players

Two Gordano School pupils won gold medals at different Badminton England tournaments.

Gordano School pupil Susanna Ogden and her badminton doubles partner Amy Mellersh won gold at the Hampshire Under-15s bronze tournament.

Playing in their first Badminton England sanctioned tournament together, the pair dominated the girls’ doubles event from an unseeded position, comfortably winning their group matches including beating the top seeds 21-14, and progressing to the final.

There they beat the winners of the other group, Antonia Fox and Kate Edwards from Dorset, 21-13. Both Susanna and Amy are members of Chew Valley Badminton Club and the Avon County Junior Under-16 squad, and train at Bath University on a weekly basis as part of the Bath Futures scheme.

Fifteen-year-old Samuel Weekes won a hard fought singles title at the Under-17 Surrey Gold badminton tournament.

Unseeded Sam, another Gordano School pupil, emerged triumphant from 40 entrants to win the demanding two-day event run as part of the Badminton England tournament circuit.

Sam, who also represents Avon Junior Badminton, won a thrilling final match 21-19, 25-23 against a hard-hitting Dorset opponent.

It was a significant victory for Sam who knocked out the No 3 seed and several higher ranked players to win one of only five prestigious Gold tournaments open to the top-ranked players in the country.
