Nailsea triathlete John Mason notched up his second win of the season at the Millfield half ironman event.

NAILSEA triathlete John Mason took his second win of the season at the Millfield half ironman distance event.

The event consisted of a 1900m swim in Millfield’s Olympic pool, a 90km bike ride including a 10km climb up Cheddar Gorge, and a 20km run around the school’s grounds which had to be shortened to 17km due to recent bad weather.

Thirty-two-year-old John led the race from start to finish, winning in a time of 4.06.30. Although the race was close after the bike leg, John completed the run in 68 minutes to take the win by almost 10 minutes.

John, who is now planning his first full ironman in 2013, said “It was a fantastic race, the Millfield pool is a great facility and brought back memories of racing there with Backwell Swimming Club.

“The bike course was tough at times and knowing I was out front with everyone chasing I did a huge personal best. The effort on the bike made the first few kilometres of the run tough, but fortunately it didn’t affect my speed and I was pleased to win, my first over this distance.”
