Gordano Valley Archers held its inaugural St Valentine Day shoot at the Downs School in Wraxall.

CONGRATULATIONS go to everyone who took part in the inaugural St Valentine Day shoot, hosted by Gordano Valley Archers.

Although this was a fun competition, the shooting was of a high standard and many new club records were set, as well as many new personal best scores.

Some notable victories included Marco Costanza, aged 10, winning the Under-16 category, Stuart McTaggart taking the senior gent’s barebow title in his first competition without sights.

There was stiff competition in the senior gent’s freestyle category with new member Andy Rix finishing a close second to the eventual winner Paul Maines.

Kate Puttergill won the senior ladies’ freestyle and Kirsten Hill-Nixon taking the senior ladies’ barebow.

In the Under-12 category, there was also some notable scores - Matthew Cannell was the top freestyle junior, Sophia Boulton top compound and Ben Johnson the top barebow archer. Again the scoring was of a high standard and a number of club records were set.

Congratulations go to Thea Sneddon, shooting in her first competition, she maintained her concentration and discipline to score highly without missing the target.

The decision to hold the competition over two sessions proved to be a great hit which encouraged many more members to take part. The weather held firm throughout the day, so no advantage was evident between the two sessions, although shooting in the failing light without a GPS signal on the arrows proved challenging towards the end of the day.

Club chairman, Paul Maines said: “It was a great day and shows the level of commitment in the club.” He went on to thank all the volunteers who helped make the day such a success, particularly the catering team who ensured the archers had plenty to eat and drink throughout the competition.

Gordano Valley Archers shoot at the Downs School in Wraxall, with beginners courses taking place most Sunday mornings. Anyone interested in learning to shoot under the guidance of a fully qualified coaching team can contact Paul Maines on 07933 481287 or by email: contact.gva2004@gmail.com
