Fierce competition in all categories for Clevedon medals

Clevedon Golf Club’s men’s and ladies’ sections saw fierce competition in all categories.

It was medal week at Clevedon Golf Club for both the men’s and ladies’ sections and the competition was fierce in all categories.

Three ladies returned nett scores of 78 and the final placings needed to be decided by countback. Sandra Jones emerged as the overall winner, and topped Division 1, pushing Sue Tasker down into second place.

Ruth Steele and Heather Priestley finished just one shot behind on 79. In Division 2, Lesley Wicking continued her run of form to clinch top spot, while Division 3 was won by Sue Hughes.

The men’s competition was equally competitive, with the best nett scores coming in the lower divisions. Gary Villis was the winner of Division 1 with a nett 70, he also recorded the lowest gross score on the day with 74 strokes. David Fife and Sam Charman also finished with rounds of 70, but lost out to Gary on countback.

Three players recorded nett rounds of 69 in Division 2, Adam Bishop winning on countback from David Sutton and Jamie Osment. Division 3 was won by Philip Morris, also with a score of 69.

In the midweek Stableford competition, the round of the day came from Jonathan Shepherd. An impressive total of 45 points gained him top spot overall which won Division 2. Mark Hodges led the top division with a score of 41.

The seniors hosted their invitation day with guests coming from around the region to enjoy the course. The runaway winners were Paul Jeffery and Patrick Brooke who recorded a better-ball score of 49 points.

Results – ladies’ medal - Division 1: Sandra Jones 78 nett (countback); Sue Tasker 78; Ruth Steele 79. Division 2: Lesley Wicking 78; Lynn Williams 83 (countback); Noreen Conway 83. Division 3: Sue Hughes 95; Tracy Buckland 96; Maggie Philpot 99.

Mens’ medal - Division 1: Gary Villis 70 nett (countback); David Fife 70 (countback); Sam Charman 70. Division 2: Adam Bishop 69 (countback); David Sutton 69 (countback); Jamie Osment 69. Division 3: Philip Morris 69; Alfie Hocking 71; Chris Marshall 76.

Midweek Stableford - Division 1: Mark Hodges 41 pts; Graham Trenaman 39; Clive Wheeler 38 (countback). Division 2: Jonathan Shepherd 45; Andrew Selwyn 38 (countback); Darren Walker 38.

Seniors’ invitation day: Paul Jeffery and Patrick Brooke (Cotswold Hills) 49 pts; Ken Gathergood and Peter Tilley (The Bristol) 46; Bernard Druce and Chris Malone (Mendip Spring) 45.
