Nailsea United 2
NAILSEA hosted Shirehampton in the third round of the League Cup and went through courtesy of a late goal by Stuart Lee.
The early play was dominated by the visitors, but Nailsea had their first chance when Jim Lee just unable to connect with a rebound from the keeper following a Harry Hope shot.
Shirehampton were unlucky not to take the lead on 25 minutes when they hit the post. Two minutes later poor handling by the visiting keeper gave Matt Long a chance, but his shot was tipped around the post.
With five minutes to half-time, Darren Bloomfield crossed for Jim Lee to prod the ball goalwards within inches of crossing the line. In the final attack of the half, a clever ball by James Springett found Harry Hope, who was unable to control the ball with only the keeper to beat.
The deadlock was broken on 65 minutes when a headed clearance by Alex Goodwin found the Shirehampton defence square allowing Matt Long to race onto the ball and beat the advancing keeper.
Shirehampton increased the tempo looking for the equaliser which duly arrived on 85 minutes with a shot from the edge of the area which curled just inside the post. Extra time looked a certainty but Nailsea side were not interested in an additional 30 minutes.
Pushing forward with a minute of normal time remaining, good work down the right saw Matt Vickers send a cross into the near post where Stuart Lee bravely slid in to force the ball into the net for the winning goal.
The action was not quite finished, the visitors had a golden opportunity to equalise in the last minute, with Scott Kendall making a brilliant block from a Shirehampton attacker.
On Saturday, the visitors to The Grove are near neighbours Ashton & Backwell, kick-off 2.30pm.

Minehead took the lead against the run of play and soon after Nailsea keeper Scott Kendall was called upon to make a diving save to keep the deficit to one goal. Minehead doubled their lead on the half hour, but within a minute a Steve Lester passed to Harry Hope, who set up Matt Long to score.
Minehead regained their two goal advantage, but the visitors equalised before half-time with goals from Jim Lee and Stuart Lee. Nailsea went into the break one goal in front when Hope set up Matt Long to score.
