Below-par Clevedon Town made it seven wins in a row with a 3-1 success at Western League Premier Division rivals Shortwood United.

The hosts nearly took a first-minute lead as Sam Blackiston tipped a Lee Bowles effort onto the crossbar.

Clevedon’s first attempt on goal came soon after as a Sam Holden corner from the left was flicked narrowly wide of the near post by Syd Camper.

A swift passing move between Liam Dempsey, Tyler Ashmead and man of the match Archie Ferris finished with Sam Holden shooting over the bar and Ferris showed his strength in the 15th minute when he turned his marker and advanced into the box before firing across goal where it was almost deflected into his own net by Joey Tustain.

Ferris sent another shot over, before Shortwood keeper Adam Clarke collided with defender Marcus Bebbington, allowing the ball to run to Holden, who hit the outside of a post.

But Clevedon took the lead on 22 minutes when Ashmead let fly from the edge of the box to find the bottom corner of the net.

And it was 2-0 just two minutes later as Lucas Vowles saw a shot blocked and Holden fired the loose ball past Clarke.

Harry Smith and Camper had further attempts at goal, with Levi Matthews was denied by Blackiston at the other end, and Ferris headed wide from a Camper corner before half time.

The hosts hit back on 47 minutes when a corner from the left was punched clear by Blackiston but fell to Lee Bowles, who picked his spot well.

Camper sent a 25-yard free-kick wide on the hour, while Vowles had a shot blocked from Holden’s through ball and Ferris had an effort cleared off the line.

And Vowles fired the wrong side of the post after rounding Clarke, after Ferris headed on Blackiston’s goal kick, on 76 minutes.

A third goal arrived two minutes from time, though, as Camper saw a free-kick hit the Shortwood wall, but sent another effort goalwards and saw it deflect off home skipper Joe Tryner to find the net.

And the win keeps Clevedon in fourth place ahead of a home match against Plymouth Parkway at The Everyone Active Stadium on Saturday (3pm).
