CLEVEDON lost by the narrowest of margins against the league leaders, but pushed them all the way and should have at least shared the points.

Jake Knill gave the hosts the lead within two minutes when he rifled home his shot after Russell Gregory’s header had been tipped onto the bar and he was the quickest to react.

Knill, Gregory and Chris Greenslade forced the early play as they took the game to St Johns and got in behind their back line on several occasions.

United gave the impetus to the visitors when a defensive lapse gave them an easy finish on goal. This spurred St John’s on and they quickly took the lead when keeper Steve Mann’s attempted clearance fell kindly to the centre forward who made no mistake.

Captain Ben Burns left the game through injury, but his replacement Nick Austin brought the scores level when he calmly slotted home after Knill’s good work on the right flank.

Clevedon had all the play, but the ball in the final third was just not good enough to find a way through. In truth the hosts were poor in both boxes and it cost them when another moment of indecision allowed the visiting striker to claim his hat-trick and seal the victory for St Johns.
