Backwell Athletic Under-14s girls opened their league account with a 5-1 win over St Nicks.

BACKWELL Athletic Under-14s started the new Bristol Girl’s League campaign with a comfortable 5-1 win away at St Nicks.

Despite losing the influential Imo Fisher to injury in the first five minutes of the match, Backwell took the lead when Ellie Bray latched on to a good through ball to beat the advancing St Nick’s keeper.

Two further good close range finishes from Carys Hector and Kierra Greenslade, on her Backwell debut, put the visitors 3-0 up before St Nicks pulled one back just before the break.

Lauren Malone capped a player of the match performance scoring a penalty and a great solo goal in the second half to make the game safe. There were fine performances from Megan Harding and Abby Bray on her debut.

PORTISHEAD Town Girls Under-12s started the season with an away trip to Longwell Green, who had beaten them twice last season.

In a tough tackling first-half, Boo Porter opened the scoring straight from a corner and Joss Lumby extended the lead converting on the far post from a free kick.

The visitors headed into the break in confident mood, but were made to work hard in the second half until they extended their lead again from a corner with Jess Smailes netting, before Boo Porter rounded off the scoring and took home the player of the match trophy.
