Four local men have been picked to represent South West England’s over-70 walking football team following a trial last week.

Danny Ward, a London cabbie for 28 years who retired to Locking four years ago, was appointed manager of the team recently and the trials were held at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre.

Ward had previously organised a National over-70 tournament in Nottingham and 40 hopefuls turned up from all over the South West, with one even travelling up from Cornwall, and a squad of 12 was eventually selected.

Ward himself took part in the trials and has been named as player-manager, with Weston’s Terry Keeling and Clevedon Town duo Lewis Ford and Jim Weetch also included in the squad.

The group are due to get together again towards the end of the month for a training session, with a trip to Merthyr Tydfil to take on Wales on March 24.

They will also take on North West England in Solihull in April, with a home match against Wales also set to take place at Hutton Moor in May.
