Congresbury claim league title with victory over Banwell.
Congresbury 2 Banwell 1
CONGRESBURY went into the final Somerset County League Division 2 West fixture of the season needing only a point to secure the league champions spot over fellow promotion candidates Yatton.
With only one defeat this season and promotion already assured, the home team broke the deadlock in the 44th minute when Jermaine Hughes curled home a left foot shot from the edge of the area.
The action continued in the second half in similar fashion with Congresbury pushing for a second goal. Strikers Kai Hammond and Rob Harroway went close with chances but were prevented by excellent saves from the Banwell keeper.
Congresbury centre-back Murray Lister was strong in defence and capped his performance at the other end of the pitch in style when he attacked a Hammond corner midway through the second half and powered home a header from eight yards.
Banwell kept up their pressure and were rewarded with a goal for their persistence which provided a good and exciting finish to a game that was a credit to the league.
Congresbury chairman Adi Hembery said: “I am extremely pleased with the hard work this season done by all at the club and our promotion reflects that hard work. We have a good management team in Ricky Adams and Kevin Hawkins, an excellent reserve and third team and a local youth policy that supports those teams.”
