The teams came into this match only separated by three points in the Toolstation Division 1 league standings, but the visitors stayed calm to collect all three points.
It all started well for the Blue and Maroons and for the first 20 minutes they pinned the visitors in their own half. Townsend skipped past the defence and his shot was tipped over for a corner. From the flag kick, Saunders’ volley went narrowly wide. The pressure paid off in the 10th minute, when Wells-Burr fouled Jones in the penalty area and Townsend coolly slotted home for the opener.
Chard came back slowly, the Stags back four held firm, but their midfield yielded too much to the visitors and the Reds equalised on 35 minutes with a fine strike from 30 yards out.
Just before the break, Thomas’ misplaced pass in defence put them under pressure and when Warren shaped to fire from 20 yards out, Saunders attempted interception ricocheted off his shin and ballooned over Clarke and into the home net.
After the break, the introduction of Jarrett added spark to the home side, as indeed did Hardidge out wide, pumping in testing balls, with one hitting the crossbar.
However by then, the Reds were 3-1 to the good when the home defence failed to clear a corner and Parris slotted the ball past Clarke.
For the final 20 minutes, the Stags were much the better side, Elson forced a great save from Wells-Burr at the near post and Townsend had a shot deflected over.
Strong words no doubt from manager Jones over the coming week and let’s hope the visit to Oldland Abbotonians on Saturday is more successful and consistent.
