CLEVEDON progressed to the next round of the Atwell Shield with a comfortable win over a spirited Division 5 side Sporting Weston.

United gave starts to 16-year-olds Dan Blackhall and Mitchell Lane in midfield, who both gave impressive displays.

Sporting were the stronger starters and forced the play. Their physical approach won them a lot of ball in the first 20 minutes, but they were never able to fashion any decent chances with Price, Williams and Manson rock solid in defence for the visitors.

United found their rhythm and passing game around the half hour mark and began to threaten with Nick Lee and Mike Banks forcing the keeper into saves.

The second half was all Clevedon and Mitchell Lane chased down a long ball and forced an early corner. Ben Pavey’s corner forced panic with Weston’s defence and centre back Paul Williams was on hand to fire home inside the box.

The second goal came minutes later when Max James out ran his marker and his perfect cross was met by Banks, who fired home his first time shot into the bottom corner.

Chances came and went for Clevedon and they should have added to their tally, but they were able to play out the rest of them game with an intelligent passing display.
