Clevedon Town were edged out 2-1 by Tavistock in their first match of the Toolstation Western League Premier Division season on Saturday.

The hosts got off to the perfect start as a mazy run by Zachary Drew and cross from Syd Camper led to a far post header from man of the match Lucas Vowles with only three minutes played.

Tavistock's Luke Cloke fired over on eight minutes, but the hosts should have doubled their lead on the quarter-hour mark when George King and Drew swapped passes to set up Ethan Feltham, whose goalbound effort was cleared off the line.

King smashed the rebound against the crossbar and Camper's cross found Feltham, whose header was straight at Josh Oak.

The visitors rallied, with Jack Crago firing over and Luke Brown forcing Tom Creed into a save.

But another good Clevedon move on 33 minutes saw Vowles tee up Drew, who found King at the far post to fire over.

Tavistock's Josh Robins cut inside and fired well wide on the stroke of half time and Clevedon had chances to double their lead after the restart.

Oak produced a superb save to tip away King's curling free-kick, then held on to Feltham's shot when he beat his marker to reach a long ball down the middle.

Clevedon were made to rue those misses on 53 minutes as a long ball down the right caused a poor header from Finlay Biggs and Brown smashed a shot into the far corner of the net.

A strong run on the right by Vowles saw him cut into the box and force Oak into a block, with Dan Evans clearing the loose ball.

But Tavistock went close on 70 minutes as Dave Hallett's free-kick found Crago, who headed narrowly wide, and Clevedon fell behind two minutes later, when Hallett's corner found Dan Evans, whose bullet header beat Creed.

And the hosts missed a good chance to level on 81 minutes when King saw a shot, destined for the top corner, deflected wide.

Vowles had penalty appeals waved away three minutes later and, despite late attempts to force an equaliser Clevedon were left empty handed ahead of their FA Cup extra preliminary round tie at Saltash United on Saturday.

Clevedon: Creed, Twiggs, Biggs (Ashmead 82), Kingdon, Ferris, Ferguson, Camper, Drew (Eastwood 63), Vowles, King, Feltham (Larkins 63). Unused: Dangerfield, Babington.
