Ashton & Backwell United fell to a late 2-1 home defeat against Sherborne Town in Toolstation Western League Division One at the weekend.

Only two minutes of normal time were left on the clock when Stags substitute Charlie Saunders fouled Haydn Hodges, moving away from goal, to concede a penalty.

And Josh Williams made no mistake from the spot to earn all three points for the visitors.

Both sides took time to adjust to the blustery conditions but on 18 minutes Sherborne had the first chance of the game from a corner as Williams had a shot pushed around the post by Lewis Coombes.

And the visitors took the lead four minutes later when an innocuous cross into the box from the left fell to the unmarked Matthew Brown, who fired into the net.

They went close to a second moments later when Nicholas Jacobs took the ball up the left touchline and sent a long-range effort over the head of Coombes, but just over the crossbar.

The Stags looked resolute in defence and midfield and had their chances too, with man of the match Jordan Bishop linking up with Sam Thomas and Connor Saunders on the half-hour mark to feed Paul Uppington, who was denied by Jamie Beale’s save.

And they drew level four minutes before the break when James White floated the ball in from the right to find the advancing Bishop, who controlled the ball on the left of the box and then volleyed home.

On 63 minutes, White found Bishop on the left and his cross just evaded Saunders, but forced a goalline clearance from George Mapletoft.

Then on 79 minutes, Joe Bishop met Harry Walker’s corner only for Williams to clear off the line once more.

With the match appearing to be heading for a draw, late substitute Saunders – who had only been on the field for three minutes after replacing Jordan Bishop – made his rash tackle and handed the visitors the chance to claim victory, which they accepted.

Next up for the third-placed Stags is a trip to title-chasing Cheddar on Saturday (3pm).

Ashton & Backwell: Coombes, Devoy, Jordan Bishop (Charlie Saunders 85), Joe Bishop, Biggins, White, Thomas, Connor Saunders, Uppington (Jones 80), Townsend, Flower (Walker 71).
