A depleted Ashton & Backwell side missing seven regular players came away from South Somerset with all three points to climb to sixth place in the table.

The opening chance fell to the hosts who fortunately shot straight at Lewis Coombes, whose quick distribution allowed Ashton to break quickly, Calum Townsend’s dangerous low cross forcing a Lydeard defender to clear over his own crossbar.

Ashton’s Jake Flower saw his 18-yard drive deflected for a corner as the visitors built the pressure. Another great Townsend cross found Flower in space and his header crashed against the bar.

Saul Jarret thought he had given Ashton the lead, only to see his close range effort cleared off the line.

Against the run of play, the Bishops took the lead with a deflected shot. Three minutes later Coombes produced a great save to thwart a 35-yard goalbound shot. Backwell finished the half on the front foot with Walker shooting narrowly wide following a six-man move and Jarret forcing the keeper into a low save.

Five minutes into the restart saw man of the match Harry Walker provide an early contender for goal of the season to level the scores. A throw-in to Sam Thomas who cleverly chested the ball into Walker’s path and his 30-yard volley flew into the net for the winning goal.

On Saturday, the Stags are home to Cheddar (3pm).

Team: Coombes, Devoy, Bishop, Biggins, Sollers (Main), Thomas, Ellis, Flower (Jones), Townsend (Pool), Jarret, Walker.
