Ashton & Backwell stage a remarkable comeback to win five-goal thriller with Calne

Ashton & Backwell United ended a four-game run without a win as they came from two goals down to beat second place Calne Town 3-2 at the Lancer Scott Stadium.

Declan McStravic and Aaron Witchell put the visitors in control with two goals in six first-half minutes to stun the hosts.

But Stags boss Stuart Jones changed formation from 5-3-2 to 4-3-3 and Jacob Spence started the comeback with his first goal for the club following a corner.

Two goals in the last 10 minutes completed the turnaround with James White's fantastic first time volley a goal of the season contender followed five minutes later by Joe Bishop's tap-in.

United came into game without a win in the League since October and The Lilywhites opened the scoring in the 31st minute as a deep corner found Charlie Norman and he pushed the ball back for McStravic to score.

Six minutes later Norman rounded Miles Hardidge on the right before crossing to an unmarked Witchell and he headed past Liam Jacques.

However, Jones's half-time tactical change almost worked instantly with Thomas freed from centre-back duties as he waltzed through the Calne defence and sent a wide ball to Uppington, who cut into the box before shooting narrowly past the near post.

After a period of pressure, the revitalised Stags got one back in the 52nd minute as man of the match White floated a corner in from the left and Spence pokled home after a scramble.

Substitute Saul Jarrett, who had been introduced in place of Uppington, caused problems as the Calne defending became very ragged and the hosts levelled on 80 minutes when the ball ballooned back out of the box to White, who met it first time and volleyed into the top corner from 30 yards out.

By now the Stags were on top and searching for a winner, but Robert Mitchell had a shot well saved by Jacques before the winner on 85 minutes.

A Charlie Rich free-kick, after a foul on George Jones, was launched into the box, which allowed Callum Townsend to pounce but his shot was blocked by visiting goalkeeper Thomson, and Bishop bundled the ball across the line for the winner.

Ashton & Backwell visit leaders Longwell Green Sports at the Longwell Green Community Stadium on Saturday (3pm).
